Looking back & looking forward

M Channel’s 2021-2025 initiatives with Stetson University

Florida’s oldest private law school and university

Beginning in 2021, M Channel’s director, Steve Schmidt, was asked to assist in a visioning process and co-draft a mission statement that led to the founding of Stetson Law School’s Jacobs Clinic for Democracy and the Environment.

Steve’s work on the law school’s new Advisory Committee, in turn, led to ideas for a Democracy Center. After initial discussions and presentations, M Channel advised and assisted in a number of ways as the University moved forward with new, expanded initiatives.

As a highlight, we brought for consideration a collaborative agreement to platform the unique Special Collection of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. We assisted in planning the digitizing of this expansive work to make it accessible online. The famed Robert Hutchins’ think tank’s resources are now offering an exceptional source of thinking and democracy-related topics for deliberation across the internet.

For several years, we also stepped up cooperatively with the University administration, president’s office, faculty and the Center for Public Opinion Research to help develop a number of inter-department Democracy Center projects.

Progress was made, a foundation put in place, and more progress is in the works even as political ‘headwinds’ and ‘stormy times’ challenge current institutions across higher education and the nation.

As 2026 arrives and having contributed steadily to Stetson’s endeavors in this arena, we move on with recognition that protection of educational institutions and the public interest is vitally needed.

A living democracy and thriving republic requires constant, caring work.

SJS /December 2025

We recall a quote of Benjamin Franklin responding to a question in 1787 about the newly announced birth of the US as he left Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention:
We have “a Republic, if you can keep it.”

Question of the Day

As the World Turns

As 2025 arrives, a “What’s Next” question seems to be on many of our minds.

One data point that arrived today is a bit eye-opening.

It seems a pause is going on as the world rolls forward…

World population growth peaked in 1968 and has been going down almost continually since …
UN projections show it will possibly fall below 0.1% in 2100.

How’s that for a “What’s Next”?

2025 and Quotidian Reality.

Good News about the WGU

In 1994, your M Channel founder ran for Lieutenant Governor in New Mexico on a “Children’s Agenda”.

After the election, an appointment by the elected Governor followed by hearings and a confirmation vote by the NM Senate, I moved into a constitutional position on the State Board of Education ‘overseeing public education policy and management’ of some 50% of the state’s budget.

Message to Planet Citizens, Planet Scientists

“Our loyalties are to the species and the planet. We speak for Earth. Our obligation to survive is owed not just to ourselves but also to that Cosmos, ancient and vast, from which we spring.”
— Carl Sagan, Cosmos

Here comes 2022! Ready for more action here on Planet Earth?

We are remembering Carl Sagan’s warning that we face grave existential challenges as we ‘mess with Spaceship Earth’s life support systems’

And we are inspired by visions of Earthrise … and our common humanity on our living planet Earth, looking up to the stars and dreaming. We have a long, long way to go …..

Now it’s ‘Big Picture’ time and let us join to tip our hats to the Hubble telescope with its amazing discoveries over the years and now, hopefully, we will be witnessing the launch of eye-opening, expanding universe explorations of the James Webb telescope !

Atomic High, the Movie

Chaos and her dragonfly babies …

The gang of kids at a school nicknamed “Atomic High”, in a secretive high mesa town of the U.S. National Lab that built the first nuclear weapon, heard the late-night Pueblo drums along the Rio Grande. A local Indian, a salvage business buyer-and-seller of thrown away lab equipment, warns the kids of ‘a visitor’. The kids shrug off their Indian friend. What’s more important is the local fast food drive-in — that and their garage-born, cutting-edge Mini-Quad copters. The Quads are drones and the kids are called geniuses as are their parents who are real-world geniuses with Ph.Ds and a gazillion accolades. Genius is everywhere in the smartest town in America. But what’s just arrived on the mountain above Los Alamos brings a surprise — and the Atomic High gang is about to find out there’s genius and then there’s beyond genius…
